I’m learning more about different school processes and came across an interesting topic. I’m working with a school that adds a few days to the end of their certifications to account for finals week. Although finals are required, they aren’t included in the part of term dates at this school.
Does anyone else add dates to the beginning or end of the published class dates when certifying classes?
1. I don’t add dates to the beginning or the end.
2. I also don’t build preset terms in EM. Since we have so many different facility codes and several courses that run at different times/dates/terms. I find it easier just to input the terms dates as I am certifying. When we set preset terms in EM, we use our published dates. We do not add or subtract days to our published dates. I have not heard of schools adjusting their published dates – I would be concerned that this practice would result in negative findings on a compliance survey.
Anonymous12/04/2024 at 4:33 amI report based on what is in our system (we use Banner) and only using something different when provided by the instructor through a standardized form I created for the students file. This is rare and would normally apply to something like student teaching.
I’m at a school that adds dates to the Parts of Term that are required to still be on campus for finals week. I have heard that the reason they don’t just built it into the schedule for the individual classes has something to do with room scheduling for longer class times during finals week. (Blink-stare in former professor.)
It caused no problems during the Compliance Survey. Finals Week is listed on the published Academic Calendar, and it only impacts one Part of Term – the one that lasts the full semester. Could we just not report that part? Sure, but the students are still required to be here for class, so they want it reported for BAH calculations. It’s compliant, and students would complain if we stopped. And those complaints (if made to GI Bill® Comparison Tool) could be found to be valid complaints.
